The Seeds of Rural Resilience: A Summit on Community Food Sovereignty and Regenerative Agriculture
May 11 - May 13
We invite all Rural Coalition farmers, ranchers, and farmworkers; and our agency partners, allies and friends working towards organic and sustainable agriculture, grazing, forestry and fisheries to join us for Seeds of Rural Resilience Summit, hosted by the Town of Atrisco Land Grant, a traditional, self-governing farm and ranch community.
We will focus on how the culture of the acequias (community irrigation systems) and other models of historical and traditional knowledge, and patterns of land use, land tenure and decision-making, relate to or could inform public food, farm, fishery and rural policies and programs to secure enduring and community-driven results.
We will also review how holistic models emerging in rural communities around regenerative agriculture, community food sovereignty and rural resilience intersect with current policy conversations around soil health, agroecology and sustainable grazing. How do these approaches address critical issues such as equity, and land and labor rights and what potential do they have to address such challenges such as climate change, invasive species, food safety, and soil and pollinator health?
Our summit will emphasize innovation, collaboration, and intergenerational knowledge transfer. We hope to emerge with a stronger holistic policy agenda to expand regenerative agriculture and revive resilience in local, national, and wider food systems. Participants will join the local community for a screening of the film, Las Acequias–The Life-Blood of New Mexico.
Monday, May 15 – San Isidro Breakfast and Acequia Walk
